Measure temperature
Record actual fridge and freezer temperatures rather than relying on how packages feel.

- Protect perishables. Move food to a working cold appliance or properly iced cooler and follow current food-safety guidance.
- Measure both compartments. Record actual fridge and freezer temperatures and the time measured.
- Check visible airflow. Make sure packages are not blocking interior vents and that doors close fully.
- Listen and look. Note constant running, repeated clicking, fan changes, frost location or water.

- Mark the first location. Record where water appears before it spreads across the floor.
- Check inside compartments. Look for water under drawers, around ice storage and beneath shelves.

- Protect the floor safely. Use towels without reaching behind powered equipment or moving a built-in appliance.

Before replacing a refrigerator, establish which function has actually failed. Cooling, ice production and water dispensing can have separate problems, and a working display does not establish that the cabinet is cold. Once your food is protected, a clear symptom history helps you assess the repair recommendation and the alternatives.
What changed before the refrigerator became warm?
Recent loading, a power interruption and a cooling setting that was switched off can all change the starting point. Whirlpool advises checking normal cooling controls and demo settings where fitted. Use the manual to identify what the display means; some displays show the selected temperature rather than a fresh measurement of the food compartment.
Give the service team a short timeline: when cooling last seemed normal, when you first measured warmth and whether either compartment recovered. Record settings without repeatedly changing them. Any manufacturer guidance about allowing temperatures to settle assumes the contents are being handled safely; it is not a reason to leave perishables in unreliable storage.
Is an ice-maker problem also a refrigerator problem?
Sometimes. Whirlpool's refrigerator ice-maker checks include freezer temperature as well as water supply, filter seating and the ice-maker switch. If frozen food is softening as ice production falls, report the cooling issue alongside the empty bin. If temperatures are stable, explain whether water dispensing also changed.
This distinction helps define the assessment. Replacing an ice-making assembly without understanding the cooling conditions may leave the original complaint unresolved. Mention a recent filter change, plumbing interruption or unusually heavy ice use, but do not disconnect a water line to investigate.
Understand the repair recommendation before deciding
Ask the technician to identify the affected system and explain how the findings support the proposed work. A control, fan, door component and sealed refrigeration repair represent different jobs. If a sealed-system repair is suggested, ask exactly what work is included and confirm who can undertake it for your model.

Do not move a connected refrigerator to obtain hidden measurements.

Against that total, weigh the repair estimate, current storage needs and the condition of the existing cabinet. A repair that preserves a suitable installation may be attractive; unresolved damage or unavailable parts may change the decision.
