You can call without trying these checks. If you choose to check anything, follow your owner's manual. Do not remove fixed panels, disconnect plumbing or test electrical parts.
Confirm fuel type
Gas and electric dryers use different heating systems, so include the fuel type with the model information.
Dryer not heating? Separate a heat fault from an airflow problem.
- Clean the lint filter. Clean it before a normal test and note whether airflow or time changes.
- Check the visible vent exit. Inspect only safely accessible areas without moving or disconnecting the dryer.
- Confirm gas or electric. The heat systems differ, and gas connection work has a separate licensing boundary.
- Describe the heat pattern. State whether it never heats, warms briefly or becomes too hot.
Dryer taking too long? Time the cycle and follow the airflow.
- Start with a normal load. Use a typical load and note fabric type, size and starting wetness.
- Clean the filter. Begin with a clean lint filter and confirm it seats normally.
- Check warmth and time. Record when warmth begins and whether the cycle ends early or runs long.
- Observe the exterior outlet. Only where safely accessible, note whether airflow seems absent or intermittent.
If the problem continues after the checks in your owner's manual, stop testing and call with what you noticed. You do not need to identify a failed part.

Dryer repair starts by separating a machine that cannot make heat from one that cannot carry moisture away. A third pattern, an automatic cycle that ends while clothes are damp, raises a different question about load and sensing. The repair estimate should reflect the pattern your dryer actually shows.
The dryer is warm, so why are clothes still damp?
Warmth does not establish that drying is working properly. On a vented dryer, moist air must leave through the exhaust path. Whirlpool's support guidance identifies restricted airflow as a reason a heated dryer can take too long. Replacing a heating part would not resolve a restriction elsewhere in that path.
Describe whether drying has gradually slowed or stopped suddenly, whether every load is affected, and whether the complaint began after the machine was moved. Air Only is intentionally unheated. Checking the programme name is useful; repeated extra cycles are not a substitute for assessing overheating or an airflow warning.
Why does an automatic dryer cycle end too soon?
Some dryers use contact with damp clothing to inform automatic drying. Whirlpool documents that very small loads may fail to contact the moisture sensors on relevant models. A single item that stops early is therefore different from a normal mixed load that remains wet every time.
Use the load and programme advice for your particular dryer. Tell the technician if a timed programme behaved differently during ordinary use, but do not run further tests when there is overheating, burning or a repeated electrical trip. An automatic-cycle complaint does not by itself prove that a sensor needs replacement.
Where does dryer repair end and vent work begin?
The appliance and the building exhaust are connected, but they are not the same piece of equipment. Whirlpool notes that long runs and extra bends can reduce airflow. A clean lint screen cannot confirm that concealed ducting or a roof termination is clear.
Mention a closet installation, upstairs laundry, shared building arrangement or inaccessible outlet when requesting service. Ask who will assess any building duct issue and whether separate vent work is required. Do not disconnect a gas dryer, climb to inspect a termination or pull a stacked installation apart. Ventless designs need their own model-specific maintenance guidance instead of an exterior-vent checklist.
Compare dryer repair with the full replacement job
Ask whether the estimate concerns heat, drum movement, control operation or an installation issue. The useful comparison is a working dryer in your home: include any vent correction that would still be necessary with a new machine. A new dryer cannot settle an unresolved household airflow problem by itself.

Why does my dryer run but not dry clothes?
